Update: Michael J Murphy Documentary

Vintage Michael J. Murphy
Today along with Phil Lyndon we began the task of assessing available materials for inclusion in the forthcoming Deer Studios documentary on Michael J. Murphy.

There's just so much stuff including press clippings, programmes, stills, video, letters from film studios and distributors, that we're going need a second day to collate it all.

Right now my mind boggles about how to hang all this stuff on the hour long interview I recorded with Mike in March this year.

This will be a somewhat organic doco for sure.

I'm also looking forward to recording interviews with two of Mike's long time collaborators to help describe what it was like working - and partying - with him throughout his career as Portsmouth's most prolific feature film maker.

Remembering Michael J. Murphy, RIP

Put to rest earlier today, here is the video tribute put together from his recent - and sadly last - interview.

Michael J Murphy was a prolific maker of feature films, based in Portsmouth, Hampshire UK. His films got distribution, he was a 'video nasty' pioneer and, my personal impression at least, a contented man who lived large and shared the wealth of his experiences.

Airninja Finds MoJo

MoJo is a fairly new phenomena in the context of mobile smartphones (the phrase MoJo - Mobile Journalist - apparently originates from 2005 mobile video) - but it seems one that shares core values with the Airninja Movie Method. Certainly in my own filmmaking lately I have gravitated to video journalism methods on the FilmRaker series (ongoing).

The first MoJoCon was held this year, 27th March 2015.

So - finally - intelligent people who aren't afraid of change embracing modern technology to tell stories. MoJo. I'm not one for labelling things, but categories sure can help with describing what you do.

One thing established MoJos seem to say is how they are now in control and self-sufficient. Whilst I'm sure not everyone is comfortable taking their own lead, for the lone wolf wanting to tell stories I can't think of any better way today.

When you are in full control of your own work you inherit authenticity and accountability that cannot easily be manufactured or teflon-shouldered. The shocking result being that you may get more deposits in your Bank Of Trust.
